Is Botox® safe?
Botox® has been used for nearly 20 years for cosmetic treatments. There are many studies showing it to be safe and effective. Allergic reactions are extremely rare. Straight after treatment there may be slight redness, bleeding or swelling. Infection is possible, as with any injection, but is uncommon. Very rarely the Botox® can cause drooping of the eyelid (ptosis) or double vision (diplopia). These take several weeks to settle. Very rarely it can cause more severe problems if given to people with neurological diseases. This is why it important to see an experienced and trained doctor. Resistance to Botox® can occur after lots of treatments, as can muscle wasting. Botox® should be administered in a clean environment by someone with an in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy, so it should only be given by a qualified healthcare professional.
Will I still have facial expression?
Yes. Botox® only works in the immediate area of the injection so the muscles related to other expressions are not affected.
Does it hurt?
Botox® is injected with a very small needle so there may be a slight sting for a few seconds. This is reduced further by use of an ice pack to numb the area after to the injection. Once the injection is complete, there is rarely any residual discomfort.
How long does it take?
Between 10 and 15 minutes. The only restrictions after the procedure are that you should not do any strenuous exercise or lie flat for about four hours. You should also try to use the facial muscles as much as possible for the next 24 hours.
